The recent extension of federal benefits by Congress was welcomed by thousands of unemployed Michigan workers who rely on extended benefits as their main source of income. However, what many did not realize is that with the same bill Congress both extended and reduced the benefits Michigan workers are eligible for.

The bill allowed unemployed workers who exhaust their emergency unemployment compensation benefits to continue applying for federal extended benefits, but it reduced the amount of weeks they are eligible for.
